Position Overview

UPMC - Pittsburgh Medical Center is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic individuals for our comprehensive Medical Assistant Trainee Program. This structured training initiative offers selected participants the opportunity to engage in a UPMC-sponsored Medical Assistant course, which encompasses clinical rotations, theoretical skill modules, a complimentary MA certification examination, and a practical externship at a UPMC outpatient facility.

Commitment Requirements:

  • Full-time dedication to a 40-hour work and training schedule for a duration of 4-5 months, which includes:
    • Mandatory in-person classroom attendance Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
    • A commitment to self-directed study of course materials for 7-10 hours weekly outside of class hours.
  • A fixed hourly compensation of $17.46.
  • A commitment to maintain full-time employment in a Medical Assistant position at UPMC for a minimum of 18 months following enrollment in the training program.

Role Purpose: To assist healthcare providers in delivering patient care, ensuring compliance with protocols and enhancing patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Manage lab reports, hospital documentation, appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and front office operations.
  • Prepare and uphold patient examination rooms, instruments, and equipment, following infection control protocols.
  • Facilitate patient flow, assist during examinations, gather patient information, and provide necessary instructions.
  • Respond to calls, deliver patient education, and perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and basic laboratory tests.
  • Support healthcare providers during procedures and accurately document details in medical records.
  • Adhere to regulatory compliance, maintain confidentiality, and follow UPMC Health System policies.

Engage in system-wide competencies and perform assigned duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current enrollment in a Medical Assistant training program is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting Certification.
  • Act 33 PA Child Abuse Clearance.
  • Act 34 PA Criminal Background Clearance.
  • Act 73 PA FBI Fingerprint Clearance.
