Job Summary

This is a full-time position working Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 3pm, with occasional weekends as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Embed, cut, stain, and perform other tasks required to process tissue in the histology lab.
  • Perform necessary tests for each sample as required, following standard operating procedures for all testing.
  • Accurately describe tissue samples.
  • Operate all instruments and equipment according to accepted written procedures.
  • Register and process cases in the laboratory information system, print worksheets, and label samples.
  • Meet acceptable turnaround time and productivity standards for the section.
  • Recognize testing errors, discrepancies, or problems and notify appropriate personnel, assisting in problem resolution.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the laboratory information system and its application to all aspects of job-related functions.
  • Recognize and resolve computer problems, as well as other issues or inconsistencies.
  • Ensure records are accurate, complete, legible, and appropriately filed and stored.
  • Operate all instruments and equipment according to accepted written procedures.
  • Recognize and identify instrument or equipment problems.
  • Resolve instrument or equipment problems or contact appropriate technical service.
  • Perform and document routine and non-routine maintenance according to standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly workplace, including instrument and general laboratory equipment.
  • Perform and document quality control daily according to established laboratory protocol.
  • Participate in proficiency testing as requested.
  • Review quantities and expiration dates of all supplies, verify receipt, label records, and store supplies received.
  • Have knowledge of other company computer systems to obtain clinical information.
  • Prepare reagents as needed.
  • Assist with training new employees.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree required.
  • 2-4 years of experience required.
  • HT or HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, required.
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills, develop, plan, and organize successful projects required.
  • Ability to function autonomously and make independent decisions required.
  • Experience with performing gross descriptions on biopsy specimens preferred.
  • Experience with standard office equipment, such as phones, faxes, copiers, scanners, email, and voice mail, preferred.
  • Experience with standard office technology in a Windows-based environment preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems preferred.
