Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Bridge Design Engineer to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our Structure and Bridge Division, you will be responsible for designing bridges that have a lasting impact on the Commonwealth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with our team to develop and implement effective bridge design solutions.
  • Analyze and interpret engineering data and information to ensure compliance with AASHTO and VDOT specifications.
  • Prepare complete, clear, and concise reports and recommendations for bridge design and construction activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems.
  • Manage assigned activities, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating engineering program activities.
  • Design, analyze, and check structural elements to ensure safe load carrying capacity and compliance with structural design standards.
  • Manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned, and serve on various committees and work groups.
Requirements
  • Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
  • Experience in structural steel design, reinforced and prestressed concrete design, and soil mechanics.
  • Ability to produce structural design plans and notes.
  • Experience applying specifications, codes, and regulations related to structural design.
  • Ability to review and administer consultant design contracts.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the design and analysis of bridges and structures.
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer's (PE) license.
  • Experience using AASHTO's LRFD design specifications and structural design software.
