Job Overview:

The Radiation Oncology Specialist is primarily engaged in the meticulous design optimization, technical assessment, and precise delivery of radiation therapy for patient treatment.

This role is crucial for ensuring the safety of patients and staff while overseeing the development and execution of quality management systems that involve external beam radiotherapy equipment and therapeutic isotopes.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Calibrate therapeutic devices to ensure accurate radiation dose delivery.
  • Oversee the assessment of radiation dose distributions for patients receiving treatment through computerized dosimetry planning or direct measurement.
  • Lead the acceptance testing of new treatment devices and equipment.
  • Supervise the design and fabrication of patient treatment aids or specialized devices (such as blocks, compensators, molds, etc.).
  • Manage the radiation safety program within the radiation oncology department.
  • Engage in equipment planning and evaluation, program development, marketing strategies, staff assessments, and budget planning.
  • Maintain essential records for regulatory compliance with JCAHO, NRC, state, and other agencies.
  • Review and endorse departmental policies and procedures.
  • Formulate policies and procedures related to radiation safety and oncology physics.
  • Provide consultation regarding personnel radiation exposure as necessary.
  • Design and implement relevant components of the quality management program concerning external beam radiotherapy equipment and therapeutic radioisotopes.
  • Administer the medical physics service to meet or exceed established standards of practice aligned with facility capabilities and resources.
  • Assess new technologies and implement them as required.
  • Collaborate with radiation oncologists regarding patient doses and the optimization of treatment plans.
  • Offer technical guidance to radiation oncology staff as directed by the department medical director.
  • Act as the primary contact for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitor equipment to ensure consistent and accurate results, ensuring adherence to maintenance protocols.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues as needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Contribute to team objectives by achieving related results as necessary.
  • Ensure that all processing and reporting deadlines are consistently met.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Compliance with the ABR Standard for Continuing Medical Education.
  • Master’s, PhD, or DMP degree.
  • ABR certification.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Skills:
  • Certification by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics and Radiological Physics.

  • Caring and empathetic demeanor with high ethical standards.
  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity for operating complex equipment.
