Position Overview

We are seeking multiple graduate-level students or recent graduates with a bachelor's or master's degree to engage in meaningful research that aligns with their academic pursuits. The focus of this role will be on various scientific disciplines, including:

  • Organic and inorganic synthesis
  • Analytical and computational methods
  • Materials characterization
  • Actinide and optical materials science
  • Electrochemistry
  • Materials chemistry and physics
  • Nanoscale materials synthesis and characterization
  • Metallurgy

This opportunity is situated within the Materials Science Division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with scientists on hands-on laboratory projects, computational tasks, or data analysis.
  • Conduct research in solid micromechanics of materials with minimal supervision.
  • Assist in developing integrated modeling capabilities for simulating micromechanical responses and fracture initiation.
  • Design and execute systematic computer simulations on LLNL supercomputers to analyze the impact of mechanical conditions on material behavior.
  • Perform technical assignments of varying complexity and provide advanced support to scientists in research and development initiatives.
  • Present findings through presentations and poster sessions.
  • Undertake additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program or recently completed a bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry, materials sciences, computational chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Proven academic excellence in relevant fields.
  • Experience applying fundamental scientific principles to address technical challenges.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey concepts effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of chemistry and materials science.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
