Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join our team at the Virginia Department of Health. As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, you will play a vital role in promoting breastfeeding among WIC participants, healthcare workers, and the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend local, regional, or state breastfeeding promotion and support trainings to enhance your knowledge and skills.
  • Operate within the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor scope of practice as defined in the WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement WIC participant service plans.
  • Represent the Local Agency and Norfolk WIC on interdisciplinary workgroups, taskforces, or coalitions within the City of Norfolk.

Requirements:

  • Personal breastfeeding experience is required.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic human lactation, breastfeeding practices, various positioning techniques, basic breastfeeding management, manual expression of breast milk, collection and storage of human milk, and good communication skills.
  • Instruct in a group and individual setting, recognize problems related to breastfeeding, and make appropriate referrals/interventions.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience with WIC as a current or previous participant is highly desirable.

Working Conditions:

This is a part-time wage position, and the availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.
