Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Blood Bank Technologist to join our team at NYU Langone Health. As a Blood Bank Technologist, you will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures, including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, and calculating and reporting of results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and complicated laboratory procedures, including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, and calculating and reporting of results.
  • Ensure the quality of testing being performed, including quality control, instrument preventative maintenance, function checks, and calibration.
  • Inventory management: maintain adequate inventory of blood and blood components, and accurately reconcile shipments, inspect blood and components for acceptance, and perform confirmatory testing and store in appropriate controlled temp devices.
  • Accurately review and accession patient samples for testing and product orders, and perform pre-transfusion testing, including ABO/Rh, antibody screening, antibody identification, DAT, and crossmatch.
  • Perform all other immunohematology tests, including cord blood, antibody titers, fetomaternal hemorrhage screen, and Hgb S testing of donor units as requested according to SOP.
  • Component modification: accurately perform blood irradiation, sterile docking of units, volume reduction of blood products, reconstitution of blood products, and thawing of frozen products.
  • Issue all blood, blood components, and HPCs carefully and with full attention to special patient needs for blood attributes and component modifications as indicated in orders, and according to SOP.
Requirements
  • NYSDOH Licensed as a Certified Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology from a program registered by the NYS Department of Education or Bachelor's Degree in the major of biology, chemistry, or physical sciences from an accredited college or university.
  • One year experience in a clinical laboratory (completion of an internship at a qualified institution is acceptable).
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills required.
