Job Summary

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Biocontainment Hazards Officer to join our Environmental Health and Safety team. This role is responsible for managing special hazards in support of our research and clinical programs' mission to find cures and save children.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage regulatory compliance for research use of highly hazardous pathogens and biological toxins, Select Agents, and other specific hazards identified by St. Jude or Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) leadership.
  • Develop and implement Select Agent-related policies and procedures, working with the Responsible Official (RO), Biosafety Officer (BSO), and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and conduct regular programmatic reviews and inspections of Biosafety Level 3 enhanced facilities, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and animal welfare regulations.
  • Review animal care and use protocols and IBC proposals related to Biosafety Laboratory Level 3 enhanced facilities, ensuring compliance with committee guidance.
  • Maintain computer databases and issue reports on authorized users of relevant biocontainment facilities, performing periodic containment security analysis.
  • Oversee physical operations of Biosafety Laboratory Level 3 Facilities, coordinating annual facility certifications and maintenance with GMP, LLC staff, ARC, FOM, and D&C departments.
  • Ensure all authorized users have completed requirements to gain and maintain access to Biosafety Laboratory Level 3 - enhanced facilities using or storing Select Agents.
  • Prepare and edit memoranda, emails, or letters for distribution to research personnel, institutional administration, and animal husbandry personnel concerning special hazards regulatory topics.
  • Respond to problems and alarms immediately, working with EHS safety officers and others to perform hazard and risk assessments, incident and near miss investigations, and inspections.
  • Maintain electronic and paper records concerning all aspects of special hazard work on campus, compiling and reporting on information required by regulatory agencies.
  • Manage, coordinate, and document all training and access requirements related to specific hazards, preparing and presenting educational materials to St. Jude staff.
  • Serve on the Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC), reviewing proposals for approval on special hazards.
Requirements
  • A Master's degree is required; a PhD will be accepted with appropriate experience.
  • Two years of experience in biomedical regulatory compliance and/or biocontainment research is required for a Master's degree holder; two years of postdoctoral biomedical research and/or biocontainment research experience will be considered for a PhD holder.
Compensation

A reasonable estimate of the current salary range for this role is $94,640 - $169,520 per year.
