Job Overview:

Under the general oversight of the Director and Clinical Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for delivering high-quality patient care through the nursing process. This role includes guiding other nursing staff and managing the operations of the assigned unit during scheduled shifts. The RN may be required to respond to call-backs and work overtime as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts initial patient evaluations using the nursing process, addressing age-specific needs, and develops a comprehensive care plan for each patient, revising as needed while ensuring continuity of care through collaboration with other shifts and departments.
  • Records initial assessments, patient care delivery, and relevant information in the patient's medical record; oversees documentation by other staff members.
  • Coordinates and administers bedside care for patients; performs, assists, or delegates skilled procedures as appropriate.
  • Administers or oversees the administration of scheduled and PRN medications, intravenous fluids, blood, and blood products.
  • Notifies physicians of patient admissions, general condition, and significant physical and emotional findings, assisting with treatments, examinations, and patient rounds as necessary.
  • Supervises patient care provided by nursing personnel; evaluates daily standards of care on the assigned shift; makes appropriate assignments based on patient acuity and staff competency; verifies accurate transcription of orders as required.
  • Prioritizes physician orders effectively.
  • Engages with patients and their families, collaborating with other disciplines to provide emotional support, education, and discharge planning.
  • Checks emergency equipment and medications on the unit each shift as assigned or required.
  • Acts as the primary caregiver, team leader, or charge nurse when designated, delegating responsibilities to support personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Facilitates the orientation of new staff to the unit and serves as a role model as needed.
  • Communicates patient information and unit operations to other shifts and management, utilizing proper communication channels with other hospital departments.
  • Provides information or assistance to ambulance personnel, law enforcement, community agencies, allied health groups, or support groups in accordance with unit policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as required or directed.
  • Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.

Licensure, Registration, Certification:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as recognized by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in Tennessee.
  • Responsible for maintaining Continuing Education Units annually.
  • BLS certification must be obtained during the orientation period and maintained while in this position.
  • ACLS certification is required.
  • NRP certification must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained while in this position.
  • Certification in a clinical specialty area by a recognized authoritative agency is desirable.
  • Additional certifications may be required at the discretion of the department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of nursing as typically acquired through a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Familiarity with hospital policies and procedures and completion of skills checklists for designated areas as acquired during the probationary period.
  • Basic computer skills are preferred.
