Position Overview
The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is a critical in-house position responsible for delivering safe, high-quality, evidence-based care to obstetric patients while effectively managing hospital resources. This role may involve supervising and educating residents and medical students when present. The OB/GYN Laborist Role A serves as the primary, first-line provider, ensuring immediate availability throughout their shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by maintaining inpatient obstetric care that meets or exceeds current standards.
- Collaborate with the obstetric care team to identify and address clinical concerns, which may include:
- Medical students
- Nursing staff
- Resident ob/gyn and/or family medicine physicians
- Maternal fetal medicine fellows
- Advanced practice providers, including certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners
- Private and/or faculty attending ob/gyn and/or family medicine physicians
- Work with the charge nurse to manage unit resources appropriately, prioritizing:
- Pending labor inductions
- Pending cesarean deliveries
- Provide on-site obstetric care for patients with no prenatal care or when the primary provider is unavailable due to emergencies.
- Facilitate transfers from outside hospitals, including:
- Accepting medically appropriate transfers
- Informing relevant team members of pending arrivals
- Managing transfers upon arrival
- Lead scheduled safety huddles and conduct post-event debriefing sessions.
- Offer clinical support to other ob/gyn attendings and advanced practice providers, which may include:
- Second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretations
- Assistance in managing obstetric emergencies
- Surgical assistance with cesarean deliveries and obstetrical laceration repairs
- Support for multifetal deliveries
- Supervise resident physicians in managing obstetric patients, including:
- Triage evaluation and management
- Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
Qualifications
- Doctorate from an accredited Medical College.
- State of Michigan Physician License (MD or DO) required upon hire.
- DEA Registration required upon hire.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Frequent standing and walking required.
- Occasional sitting and reaching above shoulder level.
Work Environment
This position is based in a high-volume labor and delivery unit, ensuring a dynamic and engaging work atmosphere.
