GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the guidance of a technical supervisor, the incumbent executes breast imaging tasks in designated areas at a technical level that does not necessitate constant oversight. Engages in a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, creativity, and initiative to apply ionizing radiation for breast imaging diagnostics. Takes responsibility for assigned areas or procedures as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts tasks such as transporting, transferring, immobilizing, and positioning patients.
- Calculates and selects appropriate technical parameters; operates equipment as necessary; processes images through automatic processing; accurately identifies images with patient ID and relevant markers to obtain quality diagnostic radiographs.
- Ensures radiation safety in accordance with established standards; assists physicians in administering contrast media, adheres to sterile techniques, and performs first aid when required. Proper labeling of tissue samples is essential.
- Instructs, advises, and assists Radiologic Technology students in conducting mammographic examinations, maintaining sterile techniques, and ensuring proper stocking of supplies in imaging rooms.
- Participates in research and Quality Improvement initiatives.
- Utilizes radiology information systems (RIS) to maintain up-to-date patient data such as scheduling and tracking, along with relevant Film Library responsibilities.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of assigned areas.
- Rotates within the department as required; collaborates with all personnel to foster a harmonious work environment.
- Explains procedures to patients, considering their physical and emotional needs while upholding ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings, in-services, and maintains appropriate continuing education units (CEUs) in compliance with state licensure and professional requirements.
- Orients new technologists to mammographic procedures and departmental policies.
- Reports equipment malfunctions and necessary repairs to appropriate personnel.
- Collects supplies from designated storage areas, stocks, and maintains adequate supplies for assigned areas.
- Employs independent judgment, creativity, and initiative under pressure in various situations without constant supervision.
- Performs additional related duties as necessary (reception, Film Library, and escort functions).
- Conducts quality control tests as required to comply with all mammography regulations.
- Executes all aspects of breast imaging including mammography, ultrasound, wire localizations, ductograms, cyst aspirations, and core biopsies including stereotactic and ultrasound-guided procedures.
- Collects and enters patient data related to the mammography module.
- Rotates within the department, divisions, and all off-site clinics, by shifts as required; collaborates with all personnel to promote a harmonious work environment.
- Graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program is required.
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts license as a Radiologic Technologist in the category of Radiography is mandatory.
- To perform mammography, the incumbent must hold a valid Massachusetts license in the category of mammography in addition to radiography.
- Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent is required.
- 2-3 years of experience as a radiologic technologist is preferred.
- Knowledge of quality control tests and familiarity with MQSA, ARC, and Massachusetts state mammography regulations is essential.
- Ability to operate and utilize all types of x-ray and related equipment and supplies effectively.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients and colleagues who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
- Ability to read and interpret requisition forms accurately.
- Capability to comprehend complex information and exercise independent judgment in various situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively to transfer knowledge and skills to students and new employees.
- Comprehensive understanding of computer operations related to Digital Imaging, the Radiology Information System (IDXRad), Outpatient Order entry Systems (Percipio), and all Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the Department of Radiology concerning patient information and management.
- Willingness to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as necessary.
- Works in a large open area in Mammography, which may be noisy and subject to temperature and humidity variations.
- Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation when adhering to proper safety protocols.
- Continuous standing and lifting may be required.
- Exposure to human waste and disease is possible.
- Considerable stress may arise from interactions with a diverse range of hospital staff, patients, and families.
