We are seeking a highly skilled Air Bearing Systems Engineer to join our team at Garrett Motion, a pioneering force in automotive powertrain technologies.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and qualifying air bearing systems from conception to industrialization phases. They will manage simulation, design, and testing activities related to air bearing system validation per customer specifications as part of a larger team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop specific air bearing system components by ensuring cooperation between design, manufacturing, product lines, procurement, product assurance, and prototyping.
  • Collaborate daily with the product line to ensure the appropriate bearing system is developed according to the needs, in terms of quality, cost, and delay.
  • Write technical reports and supervise component designs. Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and FMEA analysis.
  • Apply and participate in the development of standard methodologies for bearing system dimensioning by simulation and testing (e.g., rotor dynamics, FEA, component and machine testing).
  • Lead and/or participate in specific knowledge-gap projects.
  • Act as a bearing expert for the product line.
  • Support product development and application launches, resolve launch issues, and address field issues when necessary.
  • Apply Six Sigma tools to design a robust product. Interact with multiple cross-functional teams for new components and concepts integration into the whole product.
  • Participate in collaborations with external companies and universities in the context of their projects.
  • Maintain relationships with top players in the field of expertise (universities, labs, suppliers) to anticipate trends, stay up-to-date on industry best practices, and define the best strategy for tool development.
  • Ensure Design For Manufacturing to facilitate the industrialization process (balancing and assembly).
  • Participate in initial supplier selection and APQP.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master's degree is a plus.
  • 0-2 years of experience in bearing system dimensioning.
  • Knowledge in rotor dynamics and integration of bearings in rotating machines.
  • Knowledge of air foil bearing design and principle is a plus.
  • Skilled in simulation and understanding of product and process design tradeoffs.
  • Knowledge of test rigs, instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis systems (LabView, MATLAB, Python) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Hands-on approach.

Compensation Package:

The estimated salary range for this role is between $87,400 and $117,000 per year. Please note that this range represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered, education, training, and/or experience.
