Shift: Full-Time (36 hours/week) Nights (7p-7a)

The Hematology Oncology unit is a specialized 24-bed facility that includes 6 stepdown beds, situated on the 5th floor of the new patient bed tower. We cater to a diverse range of blood cancer cases, including Acute Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma. Our patients typically have longer stays compared to other inpatient units, allowing us to build meaningful relationships with them and their families. We serve a wide age demographic, from late adolescents to older adults. OU is proud to be the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) – Designated Cancer Center in Oklahoma.

General Description:
Under general supervision, the RN provides nursing care in a hospital setting to patients with varying health challenges, from simple to complex.

Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities outlined in this section are essential to the role. Failure to perform these responsibilities, with or without accommodation, may lead to disqualification from the position.

  • Assumes accountability for a designated group of patients.
  • Records patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments; notes all changes in physician orders for assigned patients.
  • Assists physicians during patient examinations and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatments.
  • Collects and monitors physiological data of patients, observes their physiological manifestations, and intervenes as necessary.
  • Administers medications as prescribed, initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.
  • Delivers patient care competently and compassionately.
  • Engages with patients and families to share care plans during hospitalization and at discharge.
  • Informs patients and families about hospital procedures.
  • Refers patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Delegates tasks to support staff as needed.

General Responsibilities:
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a Board Approved Program is preferred.
Experience: N/A
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC). Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required upon hire. ACLS certification within one year of hire.

Obtain Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration certification from the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) within one year of hire. Within three years of hire, obtain the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate to replace the Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services while applying nursing techniques. Ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to respond effectively to the cultural and language needs of patients and visitors. Basic computer skills are also required.
