The Clinical Nurse III role demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this expertise to a specific patient demographic.
This role assists the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort.
It anticipates changes in patient conditions and intervenes as necessary, providing guidance, education, and serving as a role model in a clinical environment.
This position delivers and accurately documents direct, age-appropriate care to patients or groups based on medical directives and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary care plan.
Furthermore, this role safely administers prescribed medications while identifying potential incompatibilities and interactions.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligibility for compact state licensure.
Experience Requirements:
Clin I: N/A Clin II: 12 to 24 months of RN experience Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience Clin IV: 5 years of clinical experience Clin V: 5 years of clinical experience.
Preferred Experience:
Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or relevant area of practice. Clin II, Clin III, Clin IV, Clin V: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations in an acute care setting or relevant area of practice.
Education Requirements:
Clin I, Clin II: Graduate of an accredited RN nursing program. Clin III: Graduate of an accredited RN nursing program. Clin IV: Minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program; certification in specialty area. Clin V: Completion of MSN, MN, MS (Nursing) Degree from an accredited program; certification in specialty area.
Preferred Education:
Clin I, Clin II: Completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program. Clin III: Certification in specialty area; completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program. Clin IV: Completion of a Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program. Clin V: Completion of a Doctoral Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
Independent Actions Required: Follows documented physician or licensed independent provider orders and practices within the regulations governing nursing in Virginia. Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards. All practice is aligned with VCU Health policies and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Organizes work and delegates tasks, supervising others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in executing assignments.
Additional Position Requirements: Clinicians work all shifts, including weekends and holidays. Shift rotations and schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager.
Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements.
Age-Specific Groups Served: As appropriate based on unit assignment. Physical Requirements: Lifting 20-50 lbs.
Other Considerations: Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances; activities include prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching, and repetitive motions. Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking. Emotional: Fast-paced environment, able to manage multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, and a noisy environment.
