JOB DESCRIPTION
CLASS TITLE:
UTILITY WORKER/
CUSTODIAN
DEFINITION:
Under the general oversight of the Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation, and under the direct guidance of a designated Supervisor or Lead Worker, this role involves performing tasks related to maintenance, operations, transportation, or grounds upkeep.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Execute custodial duties, ensuring cleanliness and upkeep of all floor surfaces, walls, windows, furniture, and woodwork. Responsible for emptying and sanitizing waste receptacles.
- Maintain and supply restroom facilities. Carry out minor repairs as needed.
- Oversee the condition and functionality of cleaning equipment.
- Prepare venues for special events or meetings.
- Collect litter from outdoor areas.
- Assist with unskilled labor tasks under the direct supervision of a staff member in maintenance, operations, grounds, or transportation sectors.
- Tasks may encompass construction, repair, maintenance, grounds-keeping, custodial duties, deliveries, or other related fields.
- Responsibilities will vary based on seasonal demands, school schedules, and district needs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- Contemporary cleaning techniques.
- Appropriate use of materials and equipment utilized in custodial, maintenance, grounds-keeping, and transportation tasks.
Ability to:
- Quickly acquire new skills.
- Work autonomously.
- Follow oral and written instructions effectively.
- Perform physically demanding tasks.
- Adapt to various assignments across different fields.
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with colleagues.
- Communicate in writing for the purpose of creating necessary reports and correspondence.
- Read, write, and comprehend the English language.
- Conduct basic mathematical calculations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Completion of education equivalent to the 12th grade.
- One year of experience in manual labor, ideally including custodial responsibilities.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires, but is not limited to, the following abilities:
Ability to:
- See for the purpose of reading labels, custodial records, and other printed materials.
- Understand spoken communication at normal levels in person or on the phone.
- Communicate clearly so others can understand normal conversations in person or on the phone.
- Operate cleaning equipment and tools with skill.
- Regularly lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Adapt to both indoor and outdoor working conditions, which may involve bending, crouching, kneeling, and pushing/pulling equipment and supplies.
- Reach in all directions and stand or walk for extended periods.
- Work on ladders and handle solvents, detergents, and other cleaning chemicals safely.
