The Post Anesthesia Care Nurse is responsible for overseeing and delivering professional nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia. This role involves utilizing the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The nurse will also provide leadership and support to other healthcare team members in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) or pre-operative settings. In the absence of supervisory personnel, the nurse may be empowered to make critical decisions regarding patient care in these areas.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
Education: Must be a graduate of a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN).
Licensure/Certifications: A valid RN license in New Mexico or a current Compact state license is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory or must be obtained within two weeks of employment. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are to be acquired within six months of hire.
Skills:
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues and patients.
- Proficient in verbal and written English communication to ensure safe patient care and meet documentation standards.
- Commitment to personal and professional development through participation in goal-setting and educational initiatives.
- Knowledge of and adherence to professional nursing standards.
Experience: Prior experience in PACU, ambulatory care, critical care, or general nursing is preferred.

Reports to: Manager of Surgical Services
Work Environment:
Exposure Risk: Category C - Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be utilized.
Physical Demands: The role may require lifting up to 50 pounds independently or up to 150 pounds with assistance. The nurse will be expected to engage in medium physical activity, including prolonged periods of walking or standing. Visual and auditory acuity, along with manual dexterity, are essential for performing nursing duties. The work environment is maintained in a clean, well-lit condition, although exposure to unpleasant sights, odors, and stressful situations may occur. The nurse may also encounter varying climate conditions and potential exposure to hazardous materials or infectious agents. Irregular hours may be necessary based on the surgical schedule.
