Electrical Metering Specialist II

JOB SUMMARY
This role involves advanced technical work in the installation, upkeep, repair, testing, and calibration of digital solid-state single-phase, poly-phase, time-of-use, and other sophisticated electrical metering systems, instrument transformers, communication devices, and associated equipment. Responsibilities also include supporting substation inspections, maintaining substation transformers, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and all related instrumentation, as well as the installation and upkeep of substation system monitoring tools and remote field SCADA systems. The work is conducted under general supervision and established procedures. Successful completion of a meter technician certification program is required for advancement to this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Conduct field installations of single-phase metering and instrumentation, along with troubleshooting tasks.
2. Execute metering shutdowns and restorations.
3. Engage with customers professionally.
4. Complete necessary documentation and record-keeping associated with job functions in a timely and professional manner.
5. Assist in the installation and troubleshooting of three-phase metering for both self-contained and transformer-rated systems.
6. Support the resolution of high bill inquiries.
7. Aid in verifying and troubleshooting meter applications using portable computing devices on a daily basis.
8. Assist in the installation of system monitoring equipment and related SCADA technology.
9. Participate in substation switching operations.
10. Help perform calibration of meters and execute mathematical calculations related to meter programming and testing.
11. Support the use and maintenance of computer-based software systems for all installed meters.
12. Assist in analyzing, troubleshooting, tracing, and isolating causes of equipment malfunctions or improper operations, and repair or replace defective components.
13. Read and interpret complex electronic metering data for billing purposes.
14. Assist in conducting substation inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
15. Participate in substation switching operations.
16. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary for the role.
• Fundamental electrical theory, principles, electrical circuits, wiring systems, and wiring schematics.
• Basic principles of customer service.
Ability to:
• Successfully complete a Meter Technician Certification Program or an equivalent training program.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public in a courteous manner.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and accurately follow oral and written instructions to maintain and prepare precise records and reports.
• Demonstrate proficiency in mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
• Adhere to safety principles and work in a safe manner.
• Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
• High School Diploma/G.E.D. or equivalent certificate, with completion of one year of vocational or technical training in basic electricity and/or electronics. An Associate degree in electrical or a closely related field is preferred, along with a minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience in the electrical utility sector.
• A minimum of four (4) years of knowledge and experience with electrical circuits and wiring systems is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in using computer programs, including Microsoft applications, email, meter programming software, and related database systems.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license.
