Position Summary
The Youth Crisis Intervention Specialist will utilize their personal experiences to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, delivering urgent response services to individuals facing behavioral and mental health challenges. This role is pivotal in providing short-term, intensive stabilization support to youth and their families, aiming to avert further crises. The position is community-oriented, necessitating service delivery in various settings such as residences, educational institutions, and other local environments.
Key Responsibilities
The Youth Crisis Intervention Specialist is tasked with the following responsibilities:
- Respond to urgent calls and engage in mobile interventions alongside a clinician as required.
- Deliver immediate support to help individuals de-escalate concerning behaviors and emotional distress that hinder their community functioning.
- Facilitate connections to ongoing services and resources to assist individuals in maintaining stability within the community.
- Collaborate with the team to provide stabilization assistance to families, which may involve conducting assessments, offering skills training, coordinating with educational and child-serving organizations, providing peer support, and linking to suitable community resources and long-term services.
- Conduct regular follow-ups with individuals and, when appropriate, their families post-crisis to encourage ongoing stability.
- Ensure accurate clinical documentation of all services in accordance with agency standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time, non-exempt role with a standard 40-hour workweek. The anticipated schedule includes:
- Tuesday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Wednesday: 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Thursday: 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Friday: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Compensation Structure
The compensation for this position is as follows:
- $25.50 per hour for candidates holding a Social Service Worker (SSW) license in Utah, with an annual increase of 1% for each year of licensure.
- $21.50 per hour for candidates possessing a bachelor's degree in a social science field without an SSW license, with a similar annual increase.
- $18.25 per hour for candidates lacking a bachelor's degree, also with an annual increase based on licensure duration.
Qualifications
Education and Licensure
A bachelor's degree in social work or a related discipline is required, along with current licensure as an SSW in Utah. Relevant experience in the behavioral health sector is essential, with crisis worker certification preferred (to be obtained post-hire).
Certification or eligibility for certification as a peer support or family peer support specialist is highly desirable.
Experience Requirements
Lived Experience
Candidates must possess personal lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges or be a caregiver of youth who have engaged with mental health or substance use services, maintaining a recovery period of at least 12 months, preferably 24 months. This includes being in stable recovery without any interruptions.
The Youth Crisis Intervention Specialist should be adept at sharing their lived experiences appropriately with clients and families.
Crisis Intervention Skills
Experience in crisis intervention, particularly with youth and families, is essential, along with the ability to provide clinical care in these contexts. To qualify for peer certification, candidates must have personal lived experience with mental health issues or as a caregiver of someone with such challenges.
Driving Record
A clean driving record is required for operating agency vehicles and transporting clients when necessary. The ideal candidate will have experience working with individuals facing severe mental health issues and demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small outreach team.
Related Experience
Preferred candidates will have a background in working with clients experiencing severe mental health challenges and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in working with populations experiencing serious emotional disturbances and severe persistent mental illness.
- Ability to motivate and engage individuals, including youth and their families.
- Understanding of child and family development principles and family systems theory.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices.
- Strong organizational and management skills.
- Capability to work independently and effectively.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and community/state agencies.
- Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for evenings and weekends.
Preference will be given to bilingual candidates, particularly those fluent in English and Spanish.
