Key Responsibilities:

The Division of Neonatology within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of South Alabama and USA Health is seeking a full-time, board-certified/board-eligible neonatologist at the Associate or Assistant Professor level. This role involves joining a collaborative team of 10 neonatologists, 3 hospitalists, and 23 nurse practitioners, focusing on clinical care, education, and research initiatives. The position may also entail the establishment of a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital is a level-3 facility, featuring a 95-bed capacity with an average daily census of 75. Our unit encompasses all pediatric subspecialties, including surgical services (excluding cardiac surgery and ECMO), neurosurgery, ENT, and orthopedics. Our team manages approximately 180 patient transports annually from across the Gulf Coast and provides coverage for two additional level-1 nurseries.

The Division of Neonatology is dedicated to delivering the highest standard of evidence-based, family-centered neonatal care in the region. Our team leads several clinical services and initiatives, including:

  • COVE (Care Of Very Extreme premature infant) program
  • NRP and Resuscitation Program
  • Neonatal Patient Safety and Quality Improvement program
  • NURTURE (Nutrition for at Risk and premature infant) program
  • Transition Care
  • Newborn Follow-up
  • Complex Care Follow-up
  • Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome clinic

Qualifications:

Successful candidates must possess a valid MD, DO, or MD/PhD, and be board certified or eligible in Neonatology. USA Health offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.

The NICU in Mobile, AL, is recognized for its outcomes concerning periviable preterm infants, featuring a dedicated Small Baby Unit for extremely premature infants. Our program is affiliated with the Vermont Oxford Network and is in the process of joining the Children's Hospital Neonatal Consortium. Faculty members have ample opportunities for research (clinical, global health, and basic science), education, and quality improvement projects to support professional development.

The neonatology team collaborates closely with Obstetrics/Maternal-Fetal Medicine in counseling and managing the care of mothers with complex fetal anomalies and those undergoing drug rehabilitation during pregnancy. Research opportunities are available through the Research in Organogenesis program, a collaborative initiative between the Division of Neonatology and the University of South Alabama Center for Lung Biology, which is nationally recognized for its studies on Pulmonary Hypertension and Oxidant Injury.
