About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician Trainee to join our team at Carilion Clinic. As a Pharmacy Technician Trainee, you will work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical care to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Liaise with pharmacy department, nursing units, and other hospital departments to deliver medications, intravenous solutions, supplies, and devices.
  • Prepare medications for dispensing and process charges, credits, and returns for medications, supplies, and devices.
  • Restock, organize, and inventory medications and supplies throughout the hospital, checking for expired medications and ordering needed items.
  • Accurately prepare sterile and non-sterile drug products in accordance with USP standards.
  • Manage the planning, scheduling, requisition, purchasing, receiving, storing, and cost accounting of supplies, medications, and equipment.
  • Prepare invoices for payment and forward them to accounting.
  • Maintain optimal medication, IV, and supply inventories by using effective inventory and group purchasing practices.
  • Return recalled, out-of-date, and overstocked medications to wholesalers, manufacturers, or returns companies.
  • Maintain and update all drug inventory documents and related files for the Pharmacy in accordance with licensing requirements and regulatory agencies.
  • Use data to maintain PAR levels and process recalled and out-of-date medications.
  • Establish productivity indicators, service standards, benchmarks, and inventory turns for senior management.
  • In-service all involved areas when Supply Chain changes occur.
  • Maintain contract compliance within Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) limitations.
  • Maintain records of medications and supplies borrowed or loaned and keep accounts current.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 9 months of hire.
  • Registration with state board of pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
  • Familiarity with a large number of medications, including strengths, dosage forms, and uses.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Basic mathematical and logistical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.
  • IV Admixture technicians must complete a course of instruction in sterile product preparation and demonstrate competency.
  • All technicians must complete an Orientation Competency.
