Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Mechanic II to join our team at Bexar County, TX. As a key member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for repairing and maintaining heavy fleet vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform brake system repairs and replacements, including wheel bearing replacement and packing
  • Repair hydraulic, suspension, fuel, and cooling systems
  • Remove and replace or repair transmissions and clutches
  • Operate testing equipment, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and mechanical systems
  • Perform welding and fabrication work for repair of equipment metal components
  • Perform preventive maintenance
  • Perform on-the-road repairs of disabled road construction equipment and heavy vehicles
  • Operate road construction equipment and heavy vehicles
  • Maintain records of repairs and services
  • Repair or overhaul gasoline/diesel driven heavy trucks and road construction equipment
Requirements
  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and four (4) years' experience as a mechanic in gasoline/diesel operated vehicles or heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of the different types of hand and power tools, knowledge of the operation and purpose of different lubricants, knowledge of diesel engines and their operations, knowledge of the use of electronic testing equipment
  • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools, and welding equipment
  • Ability to drive different road construction equipment and heavy vehicles, ability to road test vehicles and diagnose malfunctions and vehicle operating systems, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, auto part vendors, and the general public
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a valid Texas Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with Tank and Air Brakes within six (6) months from date of hire or promotion
Working Environment and Physical Demands
  • Working conditions are primarily outdoor
  • Work environment involves exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, hazardous material, flammable and toxic fumes (battery acids, cleaning solvents, gasoline, etc.) rough terrain, poisonous plants, dirt, dust, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Frequently moves about buildings and vehicles
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
  • Constantly operates tools and equipment
