Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider

As an Advanced Practice Provider in Neurosurgery, you will provide comprehensive care to patients with a wide range of brain and spine disorders on the inpatient Neurosurgery floor service at a level one trauma center. Your primary duties will include assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients in the preoperative and postoperative settings. You will work closely with neurosurgical attending and resident doctors to evaluate and consult patients in the Emergency Room, making neurosurgical diagnoses and formulating treatment plans. You will also be responsible for patients' perioperative care, preparing patients for the operating room, placing post-operative orders, and interpreting daily imaging studies and laboratory tests. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to perform simple bedside procedures such as removing surgical drains and sutures and programming shunts. If interested, you can also receive training on how to place central lines, arterial lines, lumbar drains, and external ventricular drains. You will be accountable for facilitating a quality hospital experience and outcome for patients within a cost-effective time frame. You will be responsible to the Medical Director of Patient Services and will oversee the progress of a specific caseload of patients across the care continuum, including pre-admission and post-discharge when feasible. You will act as an educator, consultant, and liaison to healthcare providers caring for patients across the care continuum.
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates a fundamental grounding in nursing theory and practice with mastery of knowledge within a defined content area.
Manages a caseload of patients in partnership with the healthcare team to optimize health status and coordinate care over time and across healthcare settings.
Provides leadership in the development, validation, implementation, and evaluation of standards, policies, procedures, and critical paths to support the patient care delivery model.
Oversees care coordination in acute, home care, and ambulatory care settings as feasible.
Assists the healthcare team to achieve mutually agreed-upon healthcare goals by providing necessary support, education, and encouragement.
Demonstrates advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills and knowledge of family dynamics.
Provides direct care to patients in acute care, ambulatory care, and home care settings.
Performs advanced practice skills under the supervision of the Medical Director.
Provides expert consultation for clinical issues, promoting increased knowledge and skills for the consultee.
Participates in the education, clinical research, and mentoring of healthcare providers.
Facilitates patient/family education in area of expertise.
Annually completes mandatory safety, infection control, BLS, and ACLS/PALS.
Prescriptive privileges per licensure.
Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited APP program and eligibility to practice as an APP in the state of Rhode Island is required.
Current registration as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Rhode Island.
An extremely high level of analytical ability.
Good interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with patients, their families, nursing personnel, and providers from other services.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.
