Family Services Specialist

Job Summary:

The Family Services Specialist at UC San Diego Health provides emotional support to families in need, facilitating organ and tissue donation discussions and developing collaborative plans to discuss donation options. This role requires a high level of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and compassion for others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide emotional support to potential donor families
  • Develop and implement collaborative plans to discuss organ and tissue donation options
  • Lead donation conversations and work with donor families throughout the donation process
  • Complete donation-related paperwork and provide end-of-life mementos
  • Serve as a liaison to the hospital for social services needs

Requirements:

  • Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science plus, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training
  • Two (2) years of experience in the organ and tissue donation field or related health care field
  • Experience working with families in grief and/or crisis situations
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting while exercising initiative and sound judgment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Pastoral Care, or related field
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish
  • Knowledge of organ and/or tissue donation
  • Working knowledge of navigating and charting in electronic medical records
  • Familiarity with medical terminology

Special Conditions:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, frequent overtime, and provide on-call coverage to area hospitals
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical
