Job Overview

Position: Academic Support Specialist

Salary: $24 /hour (base with Bachelor's Degree)

SUMMARY:

As an Academic Support Specialist within our educational institution, you will be instrumental in fostering the academic and behavioral development of our students. Your key responsibility will be to deliver focused interventions for students displaying challenging behaviors, ensuring their successful integration into the classroom setting. You will work collaboratively with educators, administrators, and support personnel to implement strategies, accommodations, and resources that promote positive outcomes for both students and staff.

Classification: Non-Exempt

Calendar Type: 11-month (Calendar 2)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, behavior analysis, or a related field is required (master's degree is preferred).
  • Experience working with students who have diverse learning needs and behavioral challenges in an educational environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct functional behavior assessments to identify the root causes of student behavior.
  • Develop and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to student needs.
  • Provide direct support and intervention to students to address challenging behaviors and encourage positive alternatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, adjusting interventions as necessary.
  • Collaborate with educators to create a supportive classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Model and reinforce effective behavior management techniques for educators to utilize in the classroom.
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support as required.
  • Offer guidance and strategies to educators for effectively managing student behavior and fostering engagement.
  • Conduct workshops or training sessions on behavior management techniques and evidence-based practices.
  • Work with educators to develop and implement comprehensive classroom-wide behavior management systems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of behavior incidents, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Analyze data to identify trends and inform decision-making regarding student support strategies.
  • Prepare reports for stakeholders, including educators, administrators, and parents, detailing student progress and interventions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including special education staff, counselors, and administrators.
  • Communicate regularly with educators, administrators, and parents regarding student progress, concerns, and achievements.
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and individual student planning sessions.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Effective communication skills in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships within the educational community.
  • Strong listening skills complemented by superior interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in using computers, including district-specific software, spreadsheets, and word processing applications.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, families, students, community members, and local and state agencies.
  • Commitment to safeguarding the confidentiality of student records.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Light Work: may require occasional light lifting.
  • Evening and weekend activities may be occasionally required.
  • Position is primarily in an office setting and may involve prolonged periods of desk work.
  • Moderate travel may be necessary.
