Key Responsibilities:
- Effective Communication and Patient Interaction
- Introduce new patients to office protocols.
- Explain the purpose of tests performed and their implications for patients.
- Gather comprehensive patient histories, including chief complaints and relevant medical backgrounds.
- Conduct precise documentation and measurement tasks, such as visual acuity and lensometry.
- Support the ophthalmic photographer in capturing necessary images.
- Assist the physician during laser treatments and minor surgical procedures, adhering to sterile techniques and infection control standards.
- Provide telephone assistance for ocular emergencies and patient inquiries.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma required.
Experience: Certification as an ophthalmic assistant or surgical technologist is preferred but not mandatory. CPR certification is required.
Skills and Competencies:
- Advanced understanding of ophthalmic assistant responsibilities as defined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
- Basic knowledge of optics and proficiency in refractometry.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Empathetic approach towards patient care.
- Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
- Comprehensive understanding of optics, refraction, and contact lenses.
- Capability to conduct thorough evaluations of multiple patients efficiently.
Work Environment: This position involves a combination of medical office and examination/procedure room settings, characterized by well-lit and ventilated spaces. Exposure to communicable diseases and typical clinic conditions is expected.
Physical and Mental Requirements: The role requires the use of proper body mechanics for patient transfers and assistance with mobility. Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 30 lbs is necessary.
