Overview
Under general supervision, the Senior Environmental Soil Scientist is responsible for conducting advanced research, offering technical guidance on the processing, regulatory oversight, and documentation related to the beneficial reuse of biosolids.Key Responsibilities
The following duties are essential and represent the core functions associated with this position. This list is not exhaustive and may include other related tasks as necessary.
- Oversees, assigns, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff.
- Coordinates with Environmental Research Technicians to gather and analyze samples and data concerning air, water, soil, and vegetation conditions at biosolid application sites.
- Compiles, organizes, and prepares monitoring reports for internal use or for submission to regulatory bodies, including the Environmental Protection Agency.
- Designs and executes research initiatives.
- Analyzes and interprets data from various sources and generates comprehensive reports.
- Provides research assistance for projects involving the land application of biosolids.
- Reviews emerging biosolids management regulations to evaluate their potential implications for the District.
- Develops and manages the section budget, anticipating necessary materials, equipment, and services for project execution and monitoring programs.
Additional Responsibilities
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment
This position may involve exposure to various chemical and biological materials, some of which may be hazardous or toxic. There may also be exposure to fumes and unpleasant odors.Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of agronomy and soil science principles, practices, and techniques.
- Familiarity with federal regulations regarding biosolid land application.
- Understanding of biosolid land application principles.
- Knowledge of management and supervisory practices.
- Ability to effectively plan and oversee the work of professional and technical laboratory and field personnel.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
A master's degree in Soil Science or Agronomy from an accredited institution, along with two years of professional experience in soil science.Substitution Policy
Graduate-level coursework in Soil Sciences or Agronomy may be considered as a substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.Promotional Criteria
- One year of experience with the District as an Environmental Soil Scientist.
- Civil service status as an Environmental Soil Scientist.
