About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Opto-Mechanical Systems Designer to join our team in San Diego, CA. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting robust opto-mechanical assemblies using precision mechanisms, adhesive bonding, shimming, kinematics, and thermal control.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop complex opto-mechanical systems with a focus on precision, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Analyze loads and environmental factors on optical/mechanical system performance, ensuring designs meet requirements and withstand challenging conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure all project requirements are met, including cost, schedule, and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Perform thorough analysis of mechanical designs, including tolerance stack-ups and Monte Carlo simulations, to validate design capabilities across manufacturing tolerances and operational conditions.
  • Better prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful designs into production, optimizing processes and reducing costs.
  • Develop project schedules and priorities with project management, ensuring timely completion and meeting deadlines.
  • Provide technical leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians, contributing to the success of a collaborative team environment.
  • Identify and communicate engineering constraints or issues to project management, collaborating to resolve problems and improve design.
  • Create mechanical engineering drawings and layouts for peer reviews, vendors, and customer evaluations, ensuring clarity and accuracy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Optical Engineering, with 8+ years of experience in opto-mechanical design and development.
  • Proven expertise in GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), and mechanical engineering design process.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams, with proficiency in design risk assessments, FMEA, and RCCA.
  • Ability to quickly understand new concepts, apply them accurately, and organize work phases to provide solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong communication, project focus, and execution skills, with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • US citizenship and ability to obtain Secret clearance.

Salary Information

The estimated salary range for this position is $104,650 - $189,175 per year, based on location, experience, and qualifications.
