We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Greenhouse Operations Supervisor to join our team at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our greenhouse facilities, ensuring the optimal growth and care of a variety of crop and plant species.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and coordinate the growth and care of a diverse range of plant species, including crop and ornamental plants.
- Manage and maintain sophisticated greenhouse equipment, including climate control systems, LED lighting, and fertigation systems.
- Develop and implement protocols for plant care, including watering, fertilization, and pest management.
- Collaborate with the Greenhouse Grower to ensure the optimal growing conditions for all plant species.
- Respond to growth system alarms and emergencies, and take corrective action as necessary.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs to ensure the longevity of greenhouse equipment.
- Coordinate experimental requests from HPI scientists and staff, including Phenotyping Senior Scientist.
- Support seed amplification of various crops of interest, and assist in planting, harvesting, and preparing tissue from plants for further analysis.
- Manage and respond to plant pests and diseases, and collaborate with the Greenhouse Grower to develop and implement integrated pest management strategies.
- Support the field program as needed, and serve as a key point of contact for greenhouse production matters.
- Order greenhouse production supplies, and manage the budget for these supplies.
- Conduct, train, and complete experimental trials with utmost safety protocols and compliance to established SOPs.
- Ensure greenhouse production operations are compliant with Federal and California environmental regulations, and report concerns to Salk EH&S as needed.
- Determine, assign, and monitor tasks for assigned production staff, and oversee work product and provide guidance to staff.
- Responsible for personnel-related activities, including recruitment and performance management.
- BS/BA degree in an agricultural, chemical, or biological sciences.
- Qualified Applicator License for pesticide application, or ability to acquire one within the first 6 months after hire.
- Strong working knowledge of and demonstrated experience with pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, and watering and planting procedures.
- Stages of plant life and pests and diseases that may occur.
- Plant care, including watering, fertilization, weeding, and pesticide application.
- Maintaining sophisticated greenhouse equipment.
- Specified local, state, and federal regulations and environmental mandates.
- Adaptability - Adapts to changes in the work environment; Manages competing demands; Changes approach or method to best fit the situation; Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
- Dependability - Follows instructions, responds to management direction; Takes responsibility for own actions; Keeps commitments; Commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals; Completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan.

The expected pay range for this position is $26.92-$35.32 hourly. Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position.
