Job Summary

A Certified Polysomnographic Technician is responsible for developing competency in and performing the basics of polysomnographic testing and associated interventions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Gather and analyze patient information, verifying medical orders and protocols.
  • Register patients and verify insurance and demographic information, outpatient data, and other patient and family information as necessary.
  • Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures, as well as orient patients to the Sleep Lab.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment for testing, ensuring proper functioning.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Perform physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.
  • Perform routine positive airway pressure mask fitting.
  • Follow procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Identify and report signal abnormalities.
  • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Assist with clerical duties, including scheduling, maintaining required data, ordering supplies and linen, managing patient files, and report distribution.
  • Assist in compiling information for Performance Improvement programs.
  • Score sleep and wake stages under the supervision of a Level II or III Polysomnographic Technician, applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Score clinical events under the supervision of a Level II or III Polysomnographic Technician, applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Complete accurate reports under the supervision of a Level II or III Polysomnographic Technician, tabulating sleep and wake and clinical event data.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience
  • Certification(s) and License(s) as required by the organization
