Histotechnician - Laboratory Specialist

Job Summary

SSM Health is seeking a skilled Histotechnician to join our team in the Laboratory - Surgical Path department. As a Histotechnician, you will play a critical role in preparing histologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist.

Responsibilities
  • Collect, label, process, and preserve tissue specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare sections of tissue for immediate examination using the frozen section technique.
  • Operate computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens with wax.
  • Perform embedding, cutting, and staining of tissues and pathology specimens received.
  • Conduct basic histology special stains using manual or automated methods.
  • Maintain equipment in the Histology lab as required.
  • Perform general histological duties and cytology specimen prep work.
  • Analyze and record data.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties, including answering the phone and filing patient records.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory supplies and work areas.
  • Stay up-to-date with new developments in the field through continuing education and competency assessments.
  • Participate in the proficiency testing program in the lab.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; 10 years of work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • No prior experience required.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near and far.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to communicate with colleagues and patients.
  • Frequent keyboard use and data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.
