Advanced Practice Provider in Orthopedic Surgery
Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Orthopedic Surgery is responsible for managing health concerns and coordinating care for surgical patients in various settings, including outpatient, acute care, and inpatient environments. These providers deliver comprehensive patient care and medical services to individuals and families, adhering to established standards of care in compliance with state and federal regulations. They assess health conditions, diagnose medical issues, formulate care plans, implement treatments, and evaluate patient responses in collaboration with supervising physicians as outlined in a Collaborative Practice Agreement.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Demonstrate the professional, clinical, and technical competencies required of an APP within the Surgical Department.
- Evaluate medical issues of patients in the designated practice area and appropriately consult with other specialties when necessary.
- Educate patients and their families on preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and medications relevant to their health status.
- Develop appropriate treatment plans based on diagnostic evaluations.
- Document all medical assessments, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations in accordance with NCQA, The Joint Commission, state regulations, and evidence-based standards of care.
- Ensure compliance with documentation standards for accurate coding and billing.
- Facilitate the review of records by physicians and peers, adhering to quality standards and implementing constructive feedback.
- Refer complex cases to collaborating physicians for further evaluation of intricate diagnostic issues, serious illnesses, and chronic conditions.
- Provide medical and emergency interventions tailored to patient needs; prescribe and monitor medications as appropriate; order and oversee emergency interventions.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Utilize the appropriate chain of command to communicate clinical issues to the Program Director, APP Director, and Medical Director, contributing to quality improvement initiatives as necessary.
- Exhibit the professional, clinical, and technical competencies specific to the assigned unit or department.

- Master's Degree in Physician Assistant OR
- Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing program for APRNs OR
- Doctor of Nursing Practice from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing program for APRNs
- Prior experience as an APRN or PA-C
- Licensed Physician Assistant (PA) in the relevant state, with a current PA-C license OR
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the relevant state, with a current APRN license
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification if working in critical care settings
- Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) certification (Non-Clinical)
- Advanced practice certification required; APRNs may obtain this within one year of hire; specific certification may be necessary based on specialty
