About the Role

Covanta is seeking an experienced Crane Operator to join our team in St Petersburg, FL. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, operating heavy equipment and contributing to the safe and efficient operation of our refuse crane.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the refuse crane to feed hoppers, maintain correct levels of refuse fuel, and mix and level refuse in the pit.
  • Perform routine inspections of overhead cranes and grapples to ensure equipment integrity and perform routine maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Observe delivery trucks for unacceptable and hazardous waste.
  • Participate in boiler cleanings and complete required training within assigned timelines.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Shift Supervisor.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Must be mechanically inclined and able to inspect equipment to ensure optimal operations of machinery.
  • Three to six months of Crane experience and/or training preferred.
  • Formal technical or apprentice training is desirable, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, technical procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, and other procedure manuals.
  • Ability to take appropriate safe action on his/her own initiative to prevent equipment damage or injury to personnel during emergencies or unusual situations; ability to follow Covanta safety rules.
  • Ability to log onto a computer and complete online assigned training.
  • Required to complete Spotter Training for Solid Waste Facilities 8-hour certification within 6 months of hire.
Work Environment

This position works on a rotating 12-hour shift, including weekends and some holidays. Overtime will be required. The work environment is fast-paced and physically demanding, with frequent exposure to high temperatures and outside weather conditions.
