Job Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Staff Attorney I to join our team at the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. As a member of our criminal defense team, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of our clients and contribute to the delivery of exceptional legal services.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will possess excellent planning and organizational skills, be self-directed, and comfortable working with a team of attorneys, investigators, and administrative staff. You will be responsible for representing criminal defendants in District Court cases, conducting client interviews, researching legal issues, and developing a theory of the case.

Responsibilities
  • Represent clients in District Court cases with integrity and professionalism.
  • Conduct thorough client interviews and maintain accurate records of case facts.
  • Research and write clear, concise motions to support client representation.
  • Develop a deep understanding of each case through discovery and investigation.
  • Develop a theory of the case that aligns with the facts and the law.
  • Be willing to try cases in court.
Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) for limited certification of admission to practice. You must also maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.

Working Conditions

This role requires working in both office and courtroom settings, with occasional travel required. The employing agency is responsible for ensuring the employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS.
