Silviculture Program Mentor

The Center for Workforce Inclusion is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Silviculture Program Mentor. This position is located within the Southwest Region 3 Kaibab Nation Forest and is part of the NFS Agriculture Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program. Candidates must be 55 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the United States. A federal security background check will be required for selected individuals.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this role is to provide mentorship and guidance to Foresters and Silviculture Trainees in the effective planning and execution of silvicultural techniques and strategies. This includes:
- Offering mentorship throughout all stages of reforestation, which encompasses cone surveys, collection, site evaluations, preparation, seeding, planting, and survival assessments across various forest locations.
- Assisting Foresters or Silviculture Trainees in conducting field assessments to identify areas needing immediate or long-term cultural treatments to meet management goals.
- Evaluating silviculture prescriptions to ensure alignment with long-term land management strategies.
- Supporting Foresters or Silviculture Trainees in assessing project sites for timber stand enhancement, drafting treatment prescriptions, and managing contracts.
- Providing training in stand inventory techniques, including Common Stand Exam protocols and forest sampling methodologies.
- Guiding Foresters and Silviculture Trainees in utilizing Forest Service applications such as FVS, FSVeg, and FACTS.
Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the following criteria: be 55 years of age or older, eligible to work in the United States, and capable of passing a federal background check. A Bachelor’s degree is required, along with a minimum of 20 years of relevant experience in forestry or a related field. Candidates should possess comprehensive knowledge of forestry land management principles and practices, including silvics, dendrology, reforestation techniques, and timber stand improvement strategies. Familiarity with associated disciplines such as wildlife management, landscape architecture, plant genetics, hydrology, and soil science is essential for developing effective silvicultural prescriptions. Understanding the interactions between environmental factors and biological planting programs is crucial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel, as well as experience with Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), Field Sampled Vegetation (FSVEG), and Forest Service Activity Tracking System (FACTS) is also required. This position may involve travel to various forest locations within the region for reforestation efforts.
Work Schedule and Compensation:
This is a part-time position, requiring 29 hours of work per week, compensated at a rate of $50.00 per hour.
This role is part of the Older Americans Act of 1965 / Title V COMMUNITY SERVICE EMPLOYMENT initiative, aimed at creating part-time public service and private sector opportunities for unemployed, experienced, and/or low-income individuals aged 55 and older.
