Key Responsibilities
  • Review physicians' orders for errors or problems and clarify with the physician or nurse as needed.
  • Enter orders accurately and completely into the computer.
  • Dispense the correct medication and complete necessary documentation.
  • Record patient diagnosis and allergies as soon as available.
  • Follow through on problem resolution and communicate any remaining problems at the end of the shift.
  • Process physician orders within a reasonable amount of time as determined by department policy.
  • Manage workload to ensure timely filling and checking of ADM medications.
  • Investigate medication errors and accurately record withdrawals and returns or transfers on perpetual inventory sheets.
  • Perform daily count and resolve any discrepancies immediately.
  • Verify anesthesiology narcotic box counts and obtain physician or CRNA signature and initials sheets.
  • Ensure controlled substance orders are ready to be delivered at the scheduled time.
  • Put away controlled substances in a timely manner.
  • Check compounded sterile products prepared by a technician throughout the day for accuracy.
  • Manage workload to ensure timely compounding of IV admixtures and special solutions.
  • Check parenteral nutrition (PN) orders for completeness and appropriateness, including incompatibilities.
  • Clarify any problematic or unclear orders with the physician.
  • Enter PN order into computer and prepare solution.
  • Minimize waste of additives and base solutions without compromising sterility.
  • Check IV delivery to ensure it leaves the Department at its scheduled time.
  • Assume responsibility in preparing special sterile product solutions, such as CADD cassettes, BARD bags, intrapleural solutions, and chemotherapy.
  • Prepare chemotherapeutic preparations as required.
  • Perform transactions on the CII Safe accurately when compounded, sterile controlled substance solutions are prepared.
