Summary of Position

The City of Stevens Point is currently seeking qualified candidates for the role of Firefighter/Paramedic. This position is essential for responding to emergencies and executing fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials management, and advanced life-support medical services.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Respond to emergency calls for fire and medical assistance, providing immediate support to individuals in distress.
  2. Engage in fire suppression activities, including exposure protection, containment, and salvage operations.
  3. Ensure readiness of all equipment and facilities through regular inspections and maintenance.
  4. Deliver emergency medical services in accordance with departmental protocols and training.
  5. Participate in incident management and fulfill assigned roles during emergencies.
  6. Engage in ongoing training and drills to enhance skills in firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical response.
  7. Conduct technical rescues in various challenging environments.
  8. Manage incidents involving hazardous materials, adhering to safety protocols.
  9. Lead public education initiatives on fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
  10. Perform non-emergency public service duties, including inspections and community education.
  11. Maintain department facilities and equipment through routine upkeep and cleaning.
  12. Document and report on all activities, ensuring compliance with departmental standards.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
  1. Minimum age of 18 years.
  2. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
  4. U.S. citizenship.
  5. Current CPAT certification.
  6. Nationally Registered Paramedic or enrollment in a Paramedic program.
  7. Wisconsin Firefighter 1 certification or equivalent.
  8. Wisconsin Firefighter 2 certification within one year of hire.

Essential Skills
  • Ability to operate firefighting and emergency medical equipment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks in high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques and emergency response protocols.
  • Capacity to maintain effective working relationships with team members and the public.
