Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) at Rush University Medical Center is a key member of the healthcare team, responsible for providing and managing care for patients, individuals, families, and communities in the microsystem. This advanced generalist role requires a strong foundation in nursing practice, leadership, and quality improvement.

ResponsibilitiesEvidence-Based Practice
  • Develop and implement comprehensive evidence-based education programs for patients and families, addressing social and psychosocial barriers, social justice, and health equity.
  • Evaluate evidence for practice, implement evidence-based practices, and use quality improvement strategies to affect improved outcomes in the microsystem.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop, implement, and evaluate care and best practices pertinent to patients within the microsystem.
Relationships and Caring
  • Serve as an advocate and resource for the care and coordination of patients across the microsystem.
  • Collaborate to address complex patient/family goals and interventions to improve patient outcomes.
  • Review and critique patient care plans, and work with the interdisciplinary team to customize interventions to attain individual patient and family goals, and reduce the risk of complications.
Critical Thinking
  • Identify factors related to safety for patients, visitors, and staff, and develop and implement plans to ensure safety across the continuum of care.
  • Coach staff and students in the development and application of critical thinking in order to manage complex patients, identify changing patient conditions, and in the delivery of patient care.
Technical Expertise
  • Partner to design and implement processes, and foster utilization of new technology and products for improving patient care and outcomes.
  • Review specific patient cases to determine compliance with standards for nursing practice and report findings to leadership, advisory committees, and appropriate standing committees.
  • Collaborate to create and implement educational programs at the microsystem level to foster clinical expertise and growth of staff.
Leadership
  • Maintain open communication with leadership to identify trends and address concerns impacting delivery of quality care.
  • Collaborate in initiatives relative to maintenance of Joint Commission accreditation, ANCC Magnet designation, and other specialty designations and accreditations within the organization.
  • Partner to support academic programs to foster meaningful educational experiences.
  • Implement and engage in care coordination of specific activities, conferences, strategies, and interventions to move the patient through the continuum of care as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Requirements
  • Current State of Illinois Professional Registered Nurse licensure
  • Graduate degree in nursing
  • National certification as Clinical Nurse Leader required upon hire unless candidate is currently enrolled in Rush University's GEM Nursing Program.
