Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Specialist to join our expanding commercial construction team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing and growing a commercial construction industry class book of business, working with mid to large accounts, and utilizing advanced underwriting skills to determine risk acceptability and pricing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review applications and financial requirements for risks requiring complex underwriting skills, determining acceptability and pricing in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  • Prepare quotes and answer questions from agencies, policyholders, or other external contacts, escalating issues to management as necessary.
  • Negotiate with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes, and notify agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, and underwriting requirements.
  • Analyze quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten, preparing reports for management review, and market products and services through agencies or the brokerage community.
  • Develop and maintain agency and/or broker relationships, providing guidance and assistance to other underwriters and functional areas as needed.
Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
  • Demonstrated high level of technical expertise and product-specific knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to work independently, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and exercise independent judgment to make critical business decisions.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software, with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with professional designations preferred, and typically a minimum three to five years underwriting experience.
