General Summary

The Lactation Consultant role is integral to our Birthing Center, reporting directly to the supervisor. This position is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of breastfeeding support for mothers and infants. The Lactation Consultant collaborates with the healthcare team and operates within the guidelines established by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Deliver personalized lactation consultations to mothers.
  2. Offer evidence-based support and resources to enhance breastfeeding practices.
  3. Assist with breast pumping techniques, storage, and collection of breast milk.
  4. Develop and analyze quality metrics to improve service delivery.
  5. Collaborate with pediatric teams for effective care and discharge planning.
  6. Design and conduct community lactation education classes.
  7. Perform follow-up consultations and phone calls as necessary.
  8. Provide mentorship and educational support to staff members.
  9. Support team functions and demonstrate technical skills effectively to ensure satisfaction among patients and healthcare providers.
  10. Complete annual competency assessments and mandatory training in a timely manner.
  11. Participate in unit meetings regularly.
  12. Maintain composure and productivity in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
  13. Adhere to patient confidentiality protocols.
  14. Promote and support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  15. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Must hold International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification upon hiring, with a minimum of two years of experience in lactation support as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Registered Nurse (RN).
  2. If not IBCLC certified at the time of hiring, the candidate must be actively pursuing certification within one year.
  3. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) is required.
  4. Must possess a valid BLS certification.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and communicate effectively.
