Role Summary:

Under the general oversight of the NICU Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the specialist provides critical life-support, resuscitation, monitoring, and various medical gas therapies to patients. This role assists individuals of all ages suffering from acute and chronic conditions in achieving a productive lifestyle through education and the application of diverse therapeutic techniques. Responsibilities may include conducting diagnostic assessments and monitoring through the use of spirometry, both at the bedside and in collaboration with physician orders for pulmonary function evaluations.

The specialist performs both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures for patients in Intensive Care and General Practice Units. Effective communication with patients, colleagues, physicians, and other healthcare personnel is essential to address patient care needs. Comprehensive documentation of all patient care activities is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
  • Delegate patient care tasks appropriately to support staff, including Respiratory Therapists, externs, and students, ensuring clear communication and guidance.
  • Engage with co-workers and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to ensure optimal patient care. Actively participate in daily bedside rounds.
  • Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, life support, and diagnostic equipment as assigned. Show competency in special procedures and protocols.
  • Administer various therapeutic modalities as prescribed by physician orders or established protocols. Determine the most effective therapy modes to ensure maximum benefit and patient safety. Deliver medications via aerosol and endotracheal instillation using appropriate equipment.
  • Administer and monitor medical gases as prescribed, utilizing suitable delivery devices.
  • Evaluate the pulmonary status of patients, communicate clinical findings to physicians, and recommend appropriate therapies. Explain procedures and equipment to patients clearly. Participate in thorough patient report processes to identify care needs.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by providing basic life support. Assess patient responses to clinical interventions and communicate findings effectively.
  • Collect and analyze arterial and capillary blood samples. Verify and interpret results, intervening clinically as necessary. Document and communicate findings to physicians when appropriate.
  • Perform specific duties as determined by site assignments, which may include equipment cleaning, maintenance, repair, and testing.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
  • Associate's degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapist Educational Program.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist License from the state of practice.
  • Successful completion of the National Board of Respiratory Care registration examination.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials.
  • Active Florida RRT License required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in PICU/NICU.
  • BLS certification required. ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP certifications must be obtained within three months of hire.
