Position Overview
The Special Education Support Substitute plays a crucial role in assisting with the supervision, care, and educational guidance of students with special needs within both mainstream and specialized classroom settings. This position involves implementing instructional strategies, monitoring student behavior during non-instructional periods, providing relevant information to school staff, and participating in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as needed.
Responsibilities may vary based on the specific requirements of the school or program, including roles such as generalist, severe/profound support, behavior management, hearing impairment assistance, and autism support.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborates with the classroom teacher to modify educational activities, assignments, and materials to ensure inclusive participation for all special education students. Assists in administering various educational materials and assignments (e.g., assessments, homework, grading) to support the teacher in evaluating student progress and addressing individual student needs. Provides first aid and medical assistance as necessary to ensure the well-being of students. Supports students with personal care requirements due to medical conditions or physical limitations, facilitating their ability to thrive in the school environment. Implements behavioral intervention plans for students with behavioral challenges, ensuring a safe and supportive learning atmosphere. Engages students in diverse activities in both individual and group settings (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce learning objectives and support educational goals. Maintains instructional resources and student records (e.g., adapting materials, tracking attendance, organizing projects) to ensure availability and accuracy of information. Monitors student activities in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways) to promote safety and a positive educational experience. Additional Duties: Willingness to substitute across different schools and various classroom types within the district. Performs other related tasks as assigned to support the effective operation of the educational unit. Reporting StructureReports directly to the building Principal or designated Special Education Supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge includes the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, comprehend and follow complex written and oral instructions, and understand instructional procedures and child development stages.
Skills encompass the ability to manage multiple tasks, adhere to safety protocols, operate standard office equipment, and maintain accurate records.
Abilities involve gathering and organizing data, working collaboratively with diverse individuals, and adapting to changing priorities. Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
Work Environment:
The role requires physical demands such as lifting (up to 60-90 pounds), carrying, pushing, and pulling, along with activities like climbing, balancing, and frequent bending. The position may involve assisting medically fragile students and supporting structured learning and behavioral activities. The job typically involves a combination of sitting, walking, and standing.
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
No specific prior experience is required.
Certifications:
Valid State of Washington Driver's License is necessary.
Training:
Completion of secure training and CPR/First Aid certification is expected.
Clearances:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance are mandatory.
