ROLE SUMMARY: The Community Maintenance Operator I is responsible for executing skilled and routine tasks related to street upkeep, construction, and repair. This role operates under close supervision while gaining experience and demonstrating the ability to handle a variety of responsibilities with increasing independence.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts construction and maintenance activities in public works sectors, including roadways, sidewalks, drainage systems, street cleaning, graffiti removal, and traffic signage.
  • Performs repairs on potholes, manages pond maintenance, and oversees tree and weed control.
  • Excavates and removes pavement; utilizes tools to dig, shovel, transport, and load various materials; ensures work sites are cleaned post-task.
  • Operates diverse trucks and motorized equipment, such as dump trucks and sweepers; conducts vehicle inspections and reports maintenance needs.
  • Removes debris and litter, handles heavy items, and assists in unloading at disposal sites.
  • Maintains storm drains, including cleaning and replacing as necessary.
  • Measures and marks lines for crosswalks and other traffic indicators.
  • Keeps accurate records of tasks performed.
  • Handles weed abatement and applies herbicides as required.
  • Conducts special pickups for large items and green waste.
  • Responsible for snow and ice removal from municipal properties.
  • Engages in green waste processing at designated facilities.
  • Sets up banners and performs tree trimming as needed.
  • Completes additional tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in general street repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to foster and maintain professional relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Capable of working independently and managing daily tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol screenings.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Familiarity with tools and materials used in street maintenance and repair.
  • Understanding of the operation and upkeep of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of traffic control measures and safety protocols.
  • Awareness of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Basic mathematical principles and record-keeping practices.
  • Proficiency in English grammar and usage.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The role requires mobility to stand, walk, and perform tasks on uneven surfaces; ability to climb and use hands for various tasks; vision for reading and identifying materials; and the capacity to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions, with exposure to noise, road hazards, and potential physical risks. Flexibility to work extended hours and rotating shifts may be necessary.
