Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Assistant is a vital member of the St. Luke's Laboratories team, responsible for supporting pre-analytical and post-analytical functions. This role promotes quality and patient safety while performing specimen collection and processing. The Medical Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for gaining competencies in collection, receiving, and distribution of specimens and samples to the appropriate area, as well as day-to-day tasks of information collection, correlation, and distribution to the appropriate area. Additionally, this role is responsible for customer service functions of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent
  • Experience: Six (6) months of lab experience or CNA, or MA
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: N/A
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: N/A
  • Experience: Six (6) months Phlebotomy, or one (1) year of medical laboratory experience
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: N/A
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computerized data management systems including operation of a computerized data management system; routine billing procedures
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient information
  • Customer service skills such as ability to effectively greet the public; work well with patients and Hospital employees; communicate effectively with all kinds of people
  • Ability to accurately maintain sample and report identity using patient name and identification number through sample receipt, processing, and reporting
  • Ability to follow directions and perform tasks outlined in procedure
  • Ability to exercise judgment and take responsibility to maintain patient health and safety during specimen collection
  • Ability to organize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to follow through internet search of tests
  • Requires depth of knowledge in the area of laboratory medicine
  • Understands hazardous materials encountered and treats in appropriate manner
Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Mathematical Skills
  • Reading: Intermediate - Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Writing: Basic - Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Speaking: Basic - Ability to speak simple sentences
  • Mathematical Skills: Basic Skills - Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance
Reasoning Ability
  • Intermediate Skills - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

  • Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development. Provides appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment

  • Ability to see, hear, and speak in English. Ability to lift up to thirty-five (35) pounds
