Overview:
The Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in the evaluation of specimen requests and the accurate entry of clinical data into various computer systems, including order entry and patient demographics. This position is responsible for identifying any discrepancies or missing information and taking necessary actions to rectify them. The role involves operating both automated and semi-automated laboratory equipment in accordance with established protocols.
Additionally, the Laboratory Assistant is tasked with effectively communicating any supply shortages to the relevant personnel, which may include issues related to specimens, documentation, database entries, and equipment availability.
Key Responsibilities:
• Adhere to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, demonstrating leadership in self-management, team collaboration, or organizational leadership.
• Maintain accurate documentation as required, including processing logs, quality control records, and reagent labeling.
• Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of laboratory equipment and glassware.
• Manage and distribute laboratory supplies efficiently.
• Prepare laboratory biohazard waste for disposal in compliance with established standards and practices.
• Oversee the supply of laboratory coats.
• Handle the ordering, receiving, stocking, shipping, and tracking of laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Ensure all laboratory equipment is functioning correctly and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
• Monitor equipment calibrations and preventive maintenance schedules.
• Maintain an accurate inventory of all consumables and reagents.
• Assist in the proper disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste.
• Support the enforcement of laboratory policies and procedures.
• Promote safety practices regarding personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Follow established protocols for safety, infection control, compliance, and the handling of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
- Preferred: Associate of Science Degree.
- Required: Basic knowledge in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and biochemistry as they relate to infectious diseases.
- Preferred: At least 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory environment or completion of a certification program.
- Required: Medical Laboratory Assistant Certification or Phlebotomist Certification (PBT ASCP, RPT AMT, CPT NPA) or equivalent.
- State Licensure required in Louisiana.
