Job Summary

Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Medical Records Specialist/Registrar to join our team. As a valuable member of our Cancer Registry department, you will provide administrative and executive support, interface with all levels of management, and contribute to the hospital's mission to provide excellence in patient care, education, research, and planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accurately obtain, abstract, and report cancer patient information from inpatient and outpatient sources in the cancer registry database.
  • Support the hospital's Cancer Program and Breast Program Accreditation Standards by completing all documentation and coding specifications in preparation for submission to the National Cancer Data Base.
  • Meet the requirements set forth by the NYS DOH Public Health Law 2401.
  • Locate all internal and external sources of cancer-related patient encounters, including physician-based hospital practices, and determine cancer eligibility.
  • Utilize all cancer-related death certificates, tumor board cases, and lists provided to the registry for inclusion and reporting by hospital-based physician practices.
  • Accurately record and code required data into a software program to create a viable, reliable database.
  • Keep up-to-date with yearly Standards-setter changes in collecting data and subsequent software changes and downloads, with the correction of any errors, so that all submitted data is accurate and timely.
Qualifications
  • Cancer Registry Certification (Certified Tumor Registrar).
  • High school diploma.
  • At least one year of administrative experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of cancer coding systems (ICDO-3, AJCC-TNM, FORDS, Cancer Program Standards, NAACCR, SEER).
  • Excellent computer data entry and writing skills with the ability to process high-volume workloads.
  • Associated degree-level knowledge of anatomy and physiology and advanced medical terminology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher.
  • Previous experience in a cancer registry setting, leadership role, with advanced computer and writing skills.
