Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Furnace Operator to join our team at Kennametal. As a key member of our production team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining our furnaces to melt metal for casting and atomization processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regulate energy supply to heat furnaces and adjust temperatures to ensure optimal melting conditions.
  • Draw and analyze metal samples from furnaces to determine material composition and adjust charging accordingly.
  • Monitor and record data using pyrometers, gas analyzers, and other instruments to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Weigh and charge materials into furnaces, using scales to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Record production data and maintain production logs to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Observe and adjust air and temperature gauges to maintain required temperatures and prevent overheating.
  • Operate controls to move or discharge molten metal from furnaces, ensuring safe and efficient handling.
  • Inspect furnaces and equipment regularly to identify defects and wear, and perform maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Maintain, rebuild, and reline pouring pots, ladles, and furnaces as required to ensure optimal performance.
  • Prepare materials for loading into furnaces, ensuring accurate and safe handling.
  • Remove impurities from molten metal using strainers to ensure high-quality output.
  • Clean the system thoroughly to prevent contamination and ensure safe operation.
  • Resolve issues related to production, machinery, and processing operations, working collaboratively with other team members to find solutions.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Commitment to working safely and ability to understand and follow all safety procedures.
  • Technical understanding of furnace operation and components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic repairs to furnace equipment.
  • Ability to monitor temperatures, pressure, and other critical parameters.
  • Skilled in maintaining accurate logs of operation, maintenance, and safety checks.
  • Basic math skills for measurements and calculations related to furnace operation.
  • Capability to perform manual labor and stand for long periods.
