Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Branch Chief of Enterprise Traffic Data, a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent, a Transportation Engineer (Electrical) serves as the Transportation Management System (TMS) Asset Data and Databased Management Support in the Enterprise Traffic Data Branch.

The incumbent is responsible for performing data integration, validation, and system development for Transportation Management System (TMS) Assets in Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) Assets. The incumbent plays an important role in managing TMS and WIM asset data for reliability, quality, and integrity and is also responsible for enhancement, development, and integration of databases related to TMS and WIM asset inventory.

Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Electrical in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Electrical online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Electrical online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Electrical) Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g. transfer, permissive reinstatement or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.

While at the base of operation, the incumbent works in a climate-controlled office under natural and artificial lighting. Due to periodic issues with heating and air conditioning, building temperatures may fluctuate. Multi-floor buildings are equipped with elevators and stairs.

The incumbent may be required to travel periodically to other office buildings (federal and state offices, district offices, local agencies, etc.) and other indoor/outdoor field locations. While at field locations, the incumbent may be exposed to uneven surfaces, noise, varying climate conditions, and live traffic. The incumbent may be required to travel within the state and out-of-state for business operations. Possession of a valid driver's license is required to operate a State-owned, leased, and/or personal vehicle.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements

  • Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Electrical) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
  • Statement of qualifications (SOQ) required.

The SOQ is a narrative of the education, training, skills, and experience that best qualify a candidate for the position. The SOQ also serves as documentation of the candidate's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing.

The SOQ must be no more than two (2) pages in length and must address the following questions in the same order as listed below.
