Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled Archeologist to join our team at the U.S. Department of the Interior. As an Archeologist, you will be responsible for providing technical archeological assistance in various areas related to or impacted by the archeological function.
Key Responsibilities- Provide general technical archeological assistance in areas such as National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 compliance, clearance, and planning, and NHPA Section 110 identification, evaluation, and management of historic properties.
- Consult with recognized Indian Tribes under provisions of the NHPA, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) to discuss concerns, ensure compliance, and assess impacts.
- Assist in the development of various documents, such as cultural resource management plans, preservation guides, historic structures reports, determinations of eligibility, etc.
- Participate in archeological field surveys, record data, and prepare survey records.
- Serve on an Interdisciplinary Team to evaluate projects to determine effects on archeological resources in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
- Develop strategies to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse effects.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- May be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties.
To qualify for this Archeologist GS-0193 position, you must possess at least one of the following basic requirements:
- Must have obtained a Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: History of archaeology, Archaeology of a major geographical area, Regional archaeology, Theory and methods of archaeology, and Archaeological field school.
- Must have taken six semester hours of related coursework in geography, geology, or cultural geography, history, historiography, or historical archaeology, environmental studies, scientific writing, or surveying.
- Must have completed archaeological field school.
OR
- Must have a degree in anthropology, history, American studies, or a related discipline that is directly related to the position being filled.
OR
- Must have a combination of education and experience that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
OR
- Must have four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications:
- At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service.
OR
- Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the position being filled.
OR
- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.
