Job Summary

The Staff Engineer - Preliminary Mechanical Design plays a critical role in leading the development of next-generation commercial aircraft engines at GE Aerospace. This position requires a strong background in mechanical engineering, with expertise in design, integration, and analysis of complex systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a technical team to design and develop the next generation of commercial aircraft engines, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as the mechanical integrator for the engine, combining input from multiple disciplines to create a clean-sheet design that balances weight, cost, and reliability.
  • Conduct trade studies to explore design options and evaluate the impact of new technologies on engine performance and efficiency.
  • Coordinate the efforts of a global and multi-disciplinary team to achieve technical requirements, schedules, and contract commitments.
  • Develop and implement plans to achieve technical requirements, schedules, and contract commitments, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery of engine designs.
  • Lead small teams through the planning and preliminary design of modules and systems, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Improve GE Aerospace's design capabilities by developing new design tools and processes for the preliminary design organization.
  • Communicate study results and status to enable business decisions, ensuring effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues, and significant developments, ensuring timely and effective resolution of issues.
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks, consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited University or College.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in an engineering position, with a strong background in mechanical engineering.
  • Desired Characteristics: Master's degree from an accredited college or university, 10+ years of experience in a mechanical engineering, supply chain, sourcing, or manufacturing operations position.
  • Experience estimating weight, product cost, maintenance cost, and design parameters early in engine development programs.
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX, exposure to compressor or turbine aerodynamics, engine cycle & performance, and both military and commercial engine design requirements.
  • Prior experience leading global cross-functional teams, strong oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to guide and influence others, and demonstrated process orientation in approach to work.
  • Demonstrated ability to document, plan, market, and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding, and capability of the business, problem analysis and resolution skills, and systems-level thinking.
