Position Overview:

In the capacity of Lead Phlebotomist, you will operate under the guidance of the Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor to ensure the collection of blood specimens for diagnostic purposes and manage the accessioning of specimens through patient blood draws and meticulous data management.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the phlebotomy section in the absence of the supervisor, ensuring effective delegation and management of tasks among fellow phlebotomists.
  • Facilitate the training of new personnel by providing comprehensive orientation regarding laboratory and hospital protocols, along with instruction on phlebotomy techniques as per institutional standards.
  • Collect blood specimens for both inpatients and outpatients by responding to requests from various hospital floors or performing draws within the laboratory for outpatient needs.
  • Prioritize stat requests, ensuring timely responses and alerting relevant department staff to urgent needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of activities through diligent logging in nursing books and completing necessary documentation.
  • Execute accessioning responsibilities, which include specimen identification, data entry, and proper labeling.
  • Support the processing department by assisting with incoming specimens and staffing requirements.
  • Contribute to overall operational efficiency by filling in at understaffed areas, initiating glucose tolerance tests, and managing phone inquiries.
  • Assist with patient follow-ups and participate in weekly supply inventory and ordering for the laboratory and clinical units.
  • Engage in the coordination of home blood draws as needed.
  • Review the Uncollected List daily for both General Lab and Microbiology to ensure efficient operations.
  • Participate in cross-training initiatives for Phlebotomy and Central Processing staff.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental functions.
